Inspired by lightning storms, Black Rain makes a simple, classic and elegant statement. It features a cluster of elongated light drops, each with a sensual black satin finish, filled with light that is reflected and enhanced in the piece’s polished interior. The internal illumination bursts forth through a sequence of slots to cast a magnificent pattern on their surroundings.

Here, portrayed in a complex formation of luminous and obscure facets, housing lighting and designed to hover in space. Available in various finishes and sizes.

Marvellously risqué and a marvellous talent, artist Mirka Mora has died aged 90. A grande dame of Melbourne’s bohemian culture, she is remembered as outrageous, witty, insatiably curious, passionate and overflowing with joie de vivre.

A vivacious champion of modernism, she left her mark on Melbourne’s cafes and restaurants – literally, in the case of her mural at St Kilda's Tolarno Hotel – as well as its galleries and theatres, even a tram, which she painted in 1978 as part of the first round of the Transporting Art project initiated by Victoria's Hamer Government.

ILANEL are honored to have our illuminating creations alongside Mora's murals.

Storehouse St Kilda exclusively features ILANEL's lighting for the month of August.

Join us on Wednesday 8th August between 5-7pm at Storehouse St Kilda (100 Barkly St. St Kilda) for a bevvy and an opportunity to get close and personal with ILANEL’s lighting and ILAN EL himself. Looking forward to seeing you.

Decoding Design / Save the Date

Three designers, three nationalities, three cultures and three design disciplines join forces to decode each other’s cultural cliches through interpretive design.
‘Decoding Design’ explores how cross-cultural preconceived ideas affect our expectations. Each individual designer will investigate a cultural perception by creating a new interpretive object.

Goodbye 2017 / Hello 2018

As 2017 draws to a close, we want to take this opportunity to thank you for your support. We are grateful for each and every one of you and we look forward to working with you in 2018.

It's been a media love fest.

ILANEL wishes to thank the editors, writers & photographers for publishing some wonderful articles in the past few weeks. We at ILANEL are thankful for their support to small business & the Australian design community. If you haven’t yet seen the articles we are thrilled to share them with you here.

The Local Project

“When people walk into my studio, I tell them that what they see here is a starting point for discussion,” he says. “It shows them that this is what I can do, but it doesn’t stop here.” He promises me that if I were to return in couple months, the place would look completely different. And I believe him."

Inside Out

"The most important thing I realised back then is that unlike any other object, luminaires have two states of existence: on and off. When off, it’s just another object in the space but when turned on, it comes to life and in turn lights our lives. It was literally a light-bulb moment; I saw the light and knew that lighting was what I wanted to do more of."

Meanwhile in Melbourne

"Ilan El is a trained architect who established his lighting studio seven years ago and has since found worldwide acclaim. He has designed lighting for an extensive range of projects, from private residential, hospitality and commercial spaces to special events such as the 2016 Save the Children Illumination Gala at The Plaza in New York."

Australian Design Review

"influences on my work are natural sciences (physics, chemistry, geology, biology). Although the road from the designer’s mind to the real world is rarely clear, for me, it is all about combining naturally inspired design with human inventiveness and creativity."

All that glitters is not gold. It's light.

Street Kitchen is open!

ILANEL, was recently commissioned to fabricate various light fixtures for their new Burnley establishment. Studio Y drew upon the world's street markets and have asked us to finalise their original concept and fabricate street-like-lighting. ILANEL created 2.5m high black feature floor lamps, with multiple arms fitted with mouth blown glass shades, bold yellow wall sconces and hero trough fixtures.  The result is a fun, eclectic eatery offering global tastes.

Named "Tree of Light", this 1.5m tall pendant is comprised of 9 mouth blown glass spheres, suspended via tiered custom made brass branches. Tree of Light also available in any number of branches and as a striking floor lamp.

Shortly after introducing our new Flash Light, we got some great media coverage and fantastic response from you all. Thank you for your support and kind words! The Flash family is growing so watch this space.

The Flash Light was originally commissioned by a graphic designer client for her new home. Her minimal yet striking work, inspired us to create this statement piece that blurs the boundaries between the two and three dimensions. Like a lightning bolt coming down from the sky. A linear luminaire, fitted with LED strips and available in various sizes and finishes.

A repetitive fluid undulation is the inspiration behind this new sensual design.  A Pendant and Floor Lamp, featuring elegant detailing fusing form and function. Available in various powder coated shades that will compliment a variety of residential, commercial and hospitality spaces.

Thank you all for joining our Creative Precinct Open Day!

May News by ILAN EL

In The Media

A fantastic write up by Annabelle Cloros for The Annual Collector's Edition of Home Design Magazine, shading light on the workings of Ilan El and his Melbourne based atelier:  "Focusing on creating contemporary and interactive designs that touch the earth lightly, Ilan is inspired by his clients, nature and natural phenomena.  “I’m intrigued by different mediums for my creations and constantly explore new ways of expression,” he says."

Rain Nine Clouds

ILANEL recently designed and fabricated a custom Rain Chandelier in a Nine Clouds configuration.  The shimmering light drops glitter at night and adding a touch of luxury and warmth to this luxury residence in South Australia.

ARUM. Porcelain Pendants.

The Arum lights are inspired by the Arum Lily flower.  Combining simplicity of form with a rather laborious and complex production process.  Each light is handmade from Southern Ice Porcelain in collaboration with a local ceramic artist.

Southern Ice Porcelain was formulated by the Australian ceramist Les Blakebrough.  It is truly magnificent, translucent, white porcelain.  Southern Ice Porcelain is one of the best porcelains available and has received international recognition as one the world’s best porcelain bodies.

Last month ILANEL took part in the Melbourne Design Week with 'DEPARTURES' Exhibition.
Opening night, launched by Architect Charles Justin was a great success with hundreds of people coming to see the show.
Supernova captivated the crowds with its complexity of form and light play.
Our interactive eclipse - Ora, quickly became centre of attention, painting the gallery in coloured light.
Special thankyou to the curator Eugenie Kawabata for her tremendous efforts in putting this fantastic exhibit together.

Set within the context of a transit lounge, an installation of handmade objects. Departures is a design exhibition exploring the relationship between nature, old traditions and new futures.
Departures is a collaborative exhibition of works by Melbourne based designer makers; Eugenie Kawabata, Marc Pascal, Yan Huang and Ilan El.
Sound designer, Duane Morrison and photographer/video designer Adrian Lander, created the mood through sound and the moving image.

Heavy Rain Hex

ILANEL recently supplied a Heavy Rain Chandelier with the new Hexagonal ceiling base to a beautiful private residence in South Australia. The shimmering light drops glitter at night and add a soft metallic touch during the day, contrasting the natural brick wall.

Ritz Carlton Astana, Kazakhstan

ILANEL's Rain Light Drops are heading to the Ritz Carlton in Kazakhstan.  Here's a sneak peek to this most recent commission of massive clusters adorning the hotel's bar.
