Form & Phenomenon - A SOLO SHOW AT GOLDSTONE GALLERY, VIC
Melbourne Design Week 2026 - Form & Phenomenon - A solo exhibition by Ilan El.
In Form & Phenomenon, Ilan El investigates the decisive moment where structure surrenders to atmosphere. By distilling complex concepts to their skeletal essence, the works identify the liminal point where material meets the intangible.
The exhibition presents a series of luminous artworks and artifacts that command light as a primary medium to activate and transform spatial volume. Drawing on the emotional resonance of saturated colour fields and organic textures, these installations create an immersive environment designed to alter perception - an investigation into the restorative and emotive power of light.
Through the manipulation of directional radiance and hand-forged materiality, El challenges the boundary between the physical object and the sensory experience it commands. Each piece serves as a vital, luminous pulse that animates its environment, inviting the observer to engage with illumination as a living legacy.
This is a contemplative experience designed to be felt.

Aether
Bespoke Light Art | Series of 01
Aether is a singular exploration of chromatic bleed and spatial dissolution. Inspired by the depth and emotional resonance of abstract expressionism, the work acts as a portal of diffuse light. Unlike traditional luminaires that serve as focal points, Aether is designed to negotiate the relationship between the viewer and the volume of the room.Constructed from Tessematt and a precision-engineered aluminium chassis, the work directs its radiant energy outwards. The high-output RGB LED engine, controlled via Casambi, allows for a choreographed "breathing" of saturated colour fields. As the hues transition, the physical boundaries of the object appear to dissolve, allowing the light to emanate into the surrounding environment. It is an investigation into the subjective nature of perception - an invitation for the observer to recognise themselves in the act of sensing.
Materials: Tessematt, Aluminium, RGB LED.
Dimensions: 180cm x 90cm x 8cm.
Technology: Integrated Bluetooth (Casambi) control.
22 Degrees Halo I & II
Bespoke Light Art | Series of 02
Named after the atmospheric optical phenomenon where light interacts with ice crystals, 22 Degrees Halo I & II investigates internal volume and optical suspension. These two installations utilise ultra-clear reeded glass to act as a complex primary lens.In a reversal of traditional lighting techniques, the illumination is directed inwards. This orientation captures the light at the edges and pulls it toward the core, creating a mesmerising optical illusion of a floating, luminous halo held in perfect suspension. The resulting phenomenon is one of impossible depth, drawing the gaze into a central void that appears both structural and ethereal.
Materials: Ultra-clear Reeded Glass, Acrylic, Aluminium, RGB LED.
Dimensions: 102cm x 102cm x 10cm.
Technology: Integrated Bluetooth (Casambi) control.
Stiria Lamps
Limited Edition Sculptural Luminaire | Edition of 10
The Stiria collection - from the Latin for ‘icicle’ - was born from the intersection of heat and recycled materiality. These artifacts represent a dual-fabrication process that bridges raw industrial forged glass with fluid, kiln-formed silhouettes. Each limited-edition piece features a rugged, organic interior structure that traps light, creating a permanent state of transition - a frozen internal radiance. Powered via 5V USB for effortless placement within a private sanctuary, the lamps utilise tunable-white LEDs to shift between the warmth of a traditional flame and the crisp clarity of natural light. Stiria serves as a vital pulse; a compact, sculptural encounter with the restorative power of intimate light.
Materials: Hand-forged Recycled Glass, Anodised Aluminium Base.
Dimensions: Ø8cm x various heights.
Technology: 5V USB, Tunable-white high-CRI LED.
