Light + Life / Melbourne Design Week 2020, Brightspace Gallery

Of all environmental factors, light and colour are the ones with the swiftest and most significant impact on our well-being. Light+Life features immersive light-based installations, aiming to engage visitors in a multi-sensory journey.

A group of eight artists and designers harnessing design capabilities to produce light-based artworks, exploring how light affects us physically, mentally and emotionally Light+Life examines new ways of design thinking, employing the immaterial into shape and form, exploring paths to illuminate ideas.

The show displays various works, from meditative through scientific to aesthetic, weaving light through life narratives.

RESONANCE: The Intersection of Light, Life, and Physiology

RESONANCE is an immersive art installation that explores the profound connection between the human body and the physics of light. Created for Melbourne Design Week, this project by Ilan El transforms clinical data into an emotive, sensory experience, bridging the gap between medical science and artistic expression.

The Vision

While medical imaging traditionally provides a cold, analytical view of our interior selves, RESONANCE seeks to humanise this data. By translating real-time physiological readings into light-based visuals, the installation creates a "conceptual embodiment" of the viewer’s own life force.

As Ilan El notes:

"My fascination with the physics of light began as I discovered the miraculous features of our eyes, and that there are also several 'extraocular' visual pathways to communicate with clarity and purpose."

How It Works

The installation features three emotive "crystal balls" that act as vessels for human data. Visitors interact with medical instruments—a Galvanometer, Oximeter, and Sphygmomanometer—to feed their physiological signatures into the art.

  • Real-Time Visualisation: Addressable RGB LEDs inside each sphere respond instantly to the data.

  • Unique Visual Vocabulary: Each "crystal ball" uses a specific light language to represent different bodily functions, such as blood pressure or oxygen levels.

  • Personalized Experience: No two light sequences are identical, as they are powered by the unique biological rhythm of the individual participant.

Scientific & Therapeutic Roots

The project is grounded in the study of Chromotherapy and the therapeutic applications of light. Drawing inspiration from the research of experts like Anadi Martel and studies on sensory lighting, RESONANCE highlights how specific light levels and colors can influence:

  • Well-being & Calm: Utilising the soothing properties of light frequently used in sensory environments for neurodiversity.

  • Body-Mind Connection: Visualising internal processes to foster a deeper understanding of our own physical state.

  • Dual-Coding Understanding: Merging the "visual" and the "verbal" (data and light) to create a more integrated mental model of the human body.
