OLIVE STREET REIMAGINED | SS&A Albury
Commissioned for the expansive 'Olive Street Reimagined' project at SS&A Albury, The Orion Collection serves as the sculptural anchor for the venue’s refined architecture. Named after the celestial hunter of Greek mythology, the installation’s defining triple-tier structure mirrors the striking verticality of Orion’s Belt. This monumental suite of lighting features four massive pendants illuminating the main lobby, two greeting guests outdoors in the grand porte-cochère, and a series of elegantly matched wall lights designed to bridge the gap between the venue's raw natural textures - such as Travertine and Tasmanian oak - and the limitless possibilities of contemporary lighting.
Orion explores softness and fluid repetition through a bespoke "shingled" aesthetic. Each component is laser-cut from high-grade aluminium before being meticulously hand-coved. This specialised coving technique transforms the flat metal into a concave, faceted silhouette that mimics the optical properties of reeded glass. When illuminated by the concealed central core, the curved geometry captures and stretches the light vertically, casting a warm and inviting ambience throughout the interior lobby and across the exterior entrance.
To achieve a finish that is both breathtaking and highly durable for a demanding Australian hospitality setting, the entire collection is crafted from bright anodised brushed aluminium. The highly reflective grain gives the pieces a living, shifting sheen that diffuses light gracefully, while providing the UV stability and weather resilience essential for outdoor installations. Structurally, The Orion Collection pays homage to mid-century Scandinavian masters like Thorsten Orrling, evolving his historic overlapping leaf techniques into a grand, site-specific scale. The result is a harmonious intersection of mid-century inspiration, advanced material engineering and the enduring magic of light, exemplifying ILANEL’s commitment to bespoke, locally made art.
